Hands up who has a written career plan? Didn’t think so.

It seems obvious but the most important document you should have is your own career plan, do you have one? And yet 90% of people do not have a written career plan. You spend your whole career doing plans for your employer such as budgets, competitor analyses, and sales projections and yet you do not have a plan for yourself and your own career.

You may have firm thoughts on your general direction but nothing beats sitting down with somebody who will act as the ‘Devil’s advocate’ for your thoughts and drawing up a plan. The trick is to think outside the box and stress test your assumptions. One of my favourite sayings is, ‘You don’t know, what you don’t know’. At worst after doing a career coaching program you will come up with a plan that is very similar to your original thoughts. Thus you have confirmation and qualification and an action plan. Was it a waste of time and money? Absolutely not, as you will have had professional advice and brainstorming to confirm that you were on the right track.

At the other end of the scale, you will avoid taking a job that is not suited to you and could finish with you not successfully completing the probation period. This will damage your esteem and your CV. You might discover industries and jobs that you would never have considered, that could be the defining job of your career. You will have identified the things in your business life that you should avoid. You may experience a dramatic increase in your remuneration package or more importantly a much more enjoyable and fulfilling work experience. Either outcome will only happen if you engage a career coach and produce your career plan.

In addition to coming up with a plan, a career coaching program will help you improve your CV, your LinkedIn profile and your interview techniques. No reputable career coach will guarantee you a job out of a program but it will significantly help you be in the best shape possible to secure the optimum job for you.

To unlock your full potential, you need to invest in your future.  Career coaching goes beyond the traditional job search. It delves into strategic career planning, helping you identify your strengths, values, and goals.

In a competitive job market, having the right skills is crucial. From communication and leadership to technical proficiency, we can guide you in honing the skills that set you apart from the crowd.

Self-assurance is a key component of career success. We can work with you to build confidence in your abilities, preparing you for interviews and hopefully employment contract negotiations. With enhanced self-esteem, you’ll approach opportunities with a newfound sense of certainty.

We Irish have many great skills but one of our known failings is in the area of procrastination. As Mason Cooley once said ‘Procrastination makes easy things hard, and hard things harder’. We love to put off things, We are effectively at full employment, so for most people, it is a case of being in a job that is largely unfulfilling and trying to find the motivation to pull the trigger on the first step of getting their new job. The wrong first step is to just start applying for jobs randomly. The correct first step is to come up with a plan and talk to somebody, confidentially, who knows the Irish recruitment industry.

The Irish economy is in good shape and one of the better-performing economies in the EU. We have been at full employment for at least five years and there are plenty of good positions that are available for most candidates. Having said that, as of Q3, 2023 we have seen a 28% drop in job vacancies, compared to 2022. Other than Pharma which is up 8%, every industry sector is down with ICT in particular being down a massive 42%. This slowing of the rate of new job vacancies will continue throughout 2024, even though the country will not dip into recession.

For most mid to senior recruitment processes, from the time a candidate applies for a job to sitting at their desk in their new employer, it is usually between three to five months. If you are looking for a new job, starting a two-month Career Coaching Program now will put you in great shape to start your new position at the end of Q2, 2024. Normally Q1 is the busiest quarter of the year for new jobs coming onto the market.
